The Legacy of a Stateman

Recognizing that the wars of the future will likely be fought over resources, General Abubakar has become a vocal advocate for environmental security and agriculture.
General Abubakar was one of the first Nigerian statesmen to explicitly link national security with food security. He has argued that many communal clashes (such as the herder-farmer conflicts) are exacerbated by climate change and desertification, not just ethnicity.
This vision is crystalized in the establishment of the Abdulsalami Abubakar University of Agriculture and Climate Action in Mokwa.
Through this lens, his “service to humanity” evolves from stopping wars to preventing the hunger and desperation that cause them.
